The last 2 days!

Yesterday we enjoyed the beautiful weather by spending some extra time outside. The students enjoyed extra time playing in the sandbox and had lots of fun using the scooters and bikes.

Today we had fun learning some new whole group in the gym. We are working on how to be safe in the gym by making sure we are aware of our own space and the space of others.

We joined Mrs. Foster’s class to learn about the Blue Zone. If we are in the Blue Zone we might be feeling sad, tired or sick. If we are in the Blue Zone we are not going to be ready to learn. We need to get ourselves to the Green Zone to be able to learn.

Gym and Zones of Regulation

Today we went to the gym for the first time. We will have gym every Day 1 and Day 3. On these days we will share our gym time with Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Donald’s class. After we came back from gym we joined Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Donald’s class to begin our lessons on the Zones of Regulation. We learned today about the Green Zone. Being in the Green Zone means we we are happy, we are smiling and we are ready to learn! We talked about how we need to be in the Green Zone on the carpet and during work time!

A Busy Monday!

We could tell that everyone rested over the weekend because the students all came in this morning eager and ready to learn! We started language jobs this morning. This is an opportunity for students to work in small group on language based activities. We are focusing on the letters and sounds if the alphabet during this language job rotation. After the students completed their jobs they had free choice activity time. This is a wonderful time for students to begin to develop new friendships.
We introduced the idea of Bucket Filling to the students (there is a link to the Bucket Filling website under links for parents). We talked about ways we can fill someone’s bucket (help, share, be kind) rather then dip someone’s bucket (be mean, take something, unkind works).
We finished our day with math jobs. Students had the opportunity to work and explore different math manipulatives.

Music Monday

Today we had a great time joining the school to celebrate our love of music by participating in Music Monday! It was wonderful to hear the school coming together in one voice!

Reminder tomorrow is the ‘Book Sale’. If any families are interested in purchasing books, please send money with your child tomorrow and they will attend the book sale with a grade 5 student. Please make sure to send the money in a clearly labelled Baggie.

Eye See….Eye Learn Program

The Eye See…Eye Learn (ESEL) program provides comprehensive eye exams by local
optometrists to Junior Kindergarten (JK) students. The eye exams are covered under the
Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) when parents show their child’s health card. There is no
out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam and if the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive
them free of charge courtesy of the participating, Eye See…Eye Learn sponsors.

The Eye See…Eye Learn program was developed to raise awareness among parents about the
importance of having their children’s eyes checked upon starting school. The Ontario
Association of Optometrists recognizes the important link between eye health and learning, and
recommends comprehensive eye examinations for all children entering kindergarten. All
children can receive an annual comprehensive eye exam covered by OHIP until their twentieth
birthday.
The ESEL program for JK students born in 2010 will end on June 30, 2015 and the new
program for children born in 2011 will begin on July 1, 2015.

Friday News

The last 2 days during our outdoor exploration time, we have been talking about and looking for signs of spring. The common comment I heard from the students was there was “Lots of garbage’. We talked about what we could do up make this better. We decided that we would go out today and try to clean up the yard by picking up some garbage. This fit in well with our celebration of Earth Hour today, where all lights, computers and radios were turned off from 2-3. Think about celebrating Earth Hour tomorrow with your families.

Back to routine!

We trust that everyone had a wonderful March Break! It was so much fun to hear of all the exciting adventures. We started Monday morning by writing about these adventures. Everyone had such great stories to share.

We have started to talk about situations in our lives that make us feel and unsafe. Yesterday with our buddies we drew pictures and wrote about times we felt safe and unsafe. We will continue to focus over the next few weeks ways we can be safe (at home, at the park, swimming, etc).

We have started a new unit in math on 3D shapes. We are using lots of great math words – sphere, cylinder, cone, cube, pyramid, prism, face, edge and vertices. The students are spending times during their math jobs exploring, building and examining these shapes that are ‘fat not flat’.

If you have any ‘recycled’ 3D shapes that you would like to donate to the class (paper towel cylinders, empty boxes, cans, etc) we would love to have have them to create using 3D shapes at our science table.
