The last 2 days during our outdoor exploration time, we have been talking about and looking for signs of spring. The common comment I heard from the students was there was “Lots of garbage’. We talked about what we could do up make this better. We decided that we would go out today and try to clean up the yard by picking up some garbage. This fit in well with our celebration of Earth Hour today, where all lights, computers and radios were turned off from 2-3. Think about celebrating Earth Hour tomorrow with your families.

Another Busy Monday
Yesterday was another busy Monday and we can’t believe that we had to turn our calendar to March. March Break is just around the corner, Easter will be here before we know it and soon enough we hope to start seeing the signs of spring. As we start moving towards the end of the year our Senior Kindergartens will be preparing for their transition to grade one and our Junior Kindergartens will be preparing to become Seniors. Please remember to continue to help your child develop their independence my making sure that their communication bags are sent daily and all forms of communication are sent in the bag (notes, money, forms, home reading folders, etc). This allows your child to be independent in making sure items are seen. We do not have time to check 26 backpacks every morning.
We have started ‘mystery star’ of the days. Each morning we pick a mystery star. The students share great things about that person and we work on making sure the go home with a ‘full bucket’. Are star yesterday was Simon.
Our new language jobs focus on ‘All About Me’. Math jobs are focused on patterning. Science we have been mixing primary colours and finally we continue to write in our journals.
Why do porcupine’s eat antlers?
We had some friends who were very excited to share the answer they found to our questions.
The answers we found were that they benefit from the bone marrow found in the antlers and that they chew on the antlers to help keep their teeth from growing too long.
Thanks for helping to answer our ‘I wonder’ question.
Homework
Today we read a great book called ‘Stranger in the Woods’ by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick. On one of the pages it talks about how a porcupine was eating antlers. We discussed how this was something that Ms. Lee did not know and we talked about why the porcupine would eat the antlers. We brainstormed some ideas and challenged the students to find the answer to our question. “Why does a porcupine eat antlers?”
Ladybugs and Outside Play
Yesterday we were reading a book about the number six. In the book it talked about how the ladybug had six spots. Charlie asked a great question – he wanted to know if ladybugs get new spots each year. Together we came up with an ‘I wonder’ question. ‘I wondering if ladybugs get new spots every year?’ We brainstormed where/how we could find this answer. The students thought we could look it up on an IPad or computer, ask a scientist, ask a vet or go to library. Some of our students went to the library and found a book on ladybugs. We could not find the answer in the book so we decided to look on the computer. We found out that ladybugs depending in what type they are have a certain number of spots and the number does not change.
As a follow up Miss. Martin prepared a ladybug craft for the students to do during activity time.
We ended the day by enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
Still Life Painting
Today the students discovered the art of still life painting. Using a pumpkin as a model, the students created. We watched a video about this technique and then began our painting. The students were only given orange, yellow, green and brown paint. They examined the different colours and texture of pumpkin.
Construction Site Exploration
Today Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Inch took the students back to explore if anything had changed at the construction site. Students had the opportunity to draw what they saw happening. We are excited to watch the progress and discover how buildings are built.
We also spend time today making a number line for our math wall and with partners students were given a task to find things in our room of specific colours.
