Thursday Fun!

We have started new math jobs with a focus on addition. This is an ongoing skill and opportunities to practice addition at home will support your child’s learning. Adding the number of forks and spoons on your table or the number of boys and girls in your house. Simple activities will help reinforce this skill.

As part of our health unit we have been talking about ways to keep our body and mind healthy. We have been talking about all the different ways we can get exercise. The students are challenged this weekend to do something active. Let us know on Monday what you did to be active.

Congrats to our honesty character education award winners – Catherine and Ava. Thank you for showing great character in our class!

Reminder that tomorrow is a PA day! No class for students. We will be here busy working on report cards.

Lost and Found – we are starting to get a collection of winter wear. If you see anything that belongs to your family, please let us know!

Toy Cleaning Evening

On Wednesday evening from 6-7 we are inviting parents in to help assist us in doing a full clean of our classroom toys before the Christmas holidays. Refreshment will be provided and we ask that children we left at home.

Also thank you to Jennifer, Laura-Lea, Kristy, Wanda, Robin and Carrie for helping make our craft day last week run so smoothly.

Christmas Cheer

Christmas Cheer is a non-profit organization that has been active in Barrie for 30 years. They currently provide over 2500 families in the Barrie area with food hampers, filled with a week’s supply of food, and a large bag of toys for their children. Most of the food and toys are provided through donations by schools and caring people. Please help to bring Christmas Cheer to a family this year by donating a non-perishable food item or an unwrapped new toy. The last day to donate will be December 12th. Last year our school surpassed our goal if 3,500 items. We donated 4,373 items. This year’s goal is 4,500 items.

Fall Fling

Reminder that this coming Friday is our Fall Fling dance. We will be dancing first period in the morning. Students are encouraged to make a $2.00 donation with half going to our school Leadership team and half going to Emily’s house (a hospice for terminally ill children).

Upcoming Dates

1 – Tomorrow is ‘Anything Hair Day’- we are looking for crazy hair and funny mustaches.

2 – Mapleview Heights will be holding a Remembrance Day Service on Tuesday November 11th at 11:30am. All of the kindergarten students will be presenting a song called ‘Peace like a river’. Please have your little one sing the song for you at home for practice. Parents are welcome to attend the service on Tuesday.

3 – The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event.

We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Your support of this vital literary event is a key part of helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms. Every dollar spent at the book fair goes towards helping our library get new books. By reaching a goal of $4000 we will receive $2300 in new items for our school collection!

The Book Fair will be open Monday – Thursday next week until 7:00 p.m., so feel free to check out the Book Fair with your child when you come for Student/Parent/Teachers Conference.

4- Reminder that next week is Student/Parent/Teachers conferences. A reminder of date and time was sent home with your child last week. If you are unable to keep your scheduled time, please let us know ASAP and we will try to reschedule.

New Star of the Day

Each child will have an opportunity to bring in an ‘object of meaning’ (award, photograph, drawing, item from a trip). Please try not to send a toy. The item brought to class should be meaningful to your child and should represent an event in his/her life. Please have your child practice telling about their object, so they will feel comfortable sharing in front of the class.

Yesterday Ms. Lee was the star and she shared a picture of her family. The students are encouraged to ask questions. We talked about how good questions use the words: who, where, why, what and when. We talked about how asking questions is different then telling us something.

We had a great star today. He was prepared to talk to about the great things he grows in his garden at home.
