Easter Celebration on Thursday

On Thursday we are going to have a class party before the Easter break. We will be making sugar cookies and decorating them. If any families would like to donate, we would appreciate icing, small candy decorations, sprinkles, etc. Thank you in advance for your support! Also if anyone has any Easter/Spring cookies cutters we could borrow, that would be wonderful (we will be sure to get them back to you)!

Eye See….Eye Learn Program

The Eye See…Eye Learn (ESEL) program provides comprehensive eye exams by local
optometrists to Junior Kindergarten (JK) students. The eye exams are covered under the
Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) when parents show their child’s health card. There is no
out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam and if the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive
them free of charge courtesy of the participating, Eye See…Eye Learn sponsors.

The Eye See…Eye Learn program was developed to raise awareness among parents about the
importance of having their children’s eyes checked upon starting school. The Ontario
Association of Optometrists recognizes the important link between eye health and learning, and
recommends comprehensive eye examinations for all children entering kindergarten. All
children can receive an annual comprehensive eye exam covered by OHIP until their twentieth
birthday.
The ESEL program for JK students born in 2010 will end on June 30, 2015 and the new
program for children born in 2011 will begin on July 1, 2015.

Friday News

The last 2 days during our outdoor exploration time, we have been talking about and looking for signs of spring. The common comment I heard from the students was there was “Lots of garbage’. We talked about what we could do up make this better. We decided that we would go out today and try to clean up the yard by picking up some garbage. This fit in well with our celebration of Earth Hour today, where all lights, computers and radios were turned off from 2-3. Think about celebrating Earth Hour tomorrow with your families.

Back to routine!

We trust that everyone had a wonderful March Break! It was so much fun to hear of all the exciting adventures. We started Monday morning by writing about these adventures. Everyone had such great stories to share.

We have started to talk about situations in our lives that make us feel and unsafe. Yesterday with our buddies we drew pictures and wrote about times we felt safe and unsafe. We will continue to focus over the next few weeks ways we can be safe (at home, at the park, swimming, etc).

We have started a new unit in math on 3D shapes. We are using lots of great math words – sphere, cylinder, cone, cube, pyramid, prism, face, edge and vertices. The students are spending times during their math jobs exploring, building and examining these shapes that are ‘fat not flat’.

If you have any ‘recycled’ 3D shapes that you would like to donate to the class (paper towel cylinders, empty boxes, cans, etc) we would love to have have them to create using 3D shapes at our science table.

Character Education Assembly

Our Character Education assembly will be next week Tuesday, March 31 at 11:30. It is not correct on the calendar we sent home. It was changed due to the March Break.
We ask that your son or daughter wear primary colours that day (that is red, blue, or yellow). We will make teddy bear ears at school for them to wear, as we will be performing the ‘Gummy Bear’ song at the assembly.
Thanks for your support.

Thursday and Friday updates!

On Thursday Mapleview is having a fundraising dance for a student who has been admitted to Sick Kids with chest infections and other complications associated with her special needs. The family has been unable to work because of the time spent at the hospital and care for her two younger brothers. We are asking that students donate $2 as admission with all proceeds going to the family. If you wish to donate more, that would be graciously accepted. All students are asked to wear pink that day as it is Chloe’s favourite colour. Thanks so much in advance for your generosity to help offset travel costs meals, gas and other expenses for Chloe’s’ family. The kindergartens will be dancing first thing in the morning!

An addition to the calendar – on Friday March 12 the students have the opportunity to show their school spirit by dressing up as their future occupation! Maybe we will see some mechanics, teachers, nurses, or vets, whatever you dream about!

Outdoor Exploration

Tomorrow all the kindergarten classes will have the opportunity to work with a member of the SCDSB outdoor education team. Each class will have a turn to be outside learning for 50 min. Please send extra mittens and socks as we may get a little soggy
